Our master landscaper and gardener, teacher, and proprietor is Jack Jarvis. Jack grew up on the family farm outside Mars Hill. The Mars Hill area is a temperate, mountain, rain forest. Nestled as it is between the Great Smokey, Black, and Blue Ridge mountains, it boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes in the world. Here Jack learned the art of combining soil, stone, water, and plants into wonderfully inventive, inspiring, and relaxing natural environments. As a boy, Jack "landscaped" his family's and neighbors' homes with wild azaleas, rhodies, laurels, lillies, and wild flowering perennials. Right out of high school he farmed corn, tobacco, vegetables, and cattle and continued to do landscaping whenever the opportunity arose. His big break came in 1986 when Mrs Richardson commissioned him to transform her homestead into a Japanese garden. The project was a great success then - the trees and shrubs have matured today and the garden is stunning. He has always supported and been supported by an extended community of family, friends, businesses, craftsmen and craftswomen, professionals, and artists. He generously supports many causes.
